Multidisciplinary Research at the Department

The scientific research at the Department of Biochemistry and Food Chemistry is a diverse combination of fundamental research and applied science. The focus areas extensively cover the field of modern biochemistry of bacteria, lower eucaryotes, metazoa and plants, and span from structure-function interplay of biomolecules, metabolism and regulation, to related analytical and diagnostic applications. Collectively, the research involves over 30 individual research groups organized in four parallel disciplines of the department: Biochemistry, Molecular Biotechniology and diagnosticsFood Chemistry and Molecular Plant Biology.

In addition to joint projects within the department, the research groups actively participate in a wide range of national and international collaborative projects with universities, research institutes and companies.

The research projects are funded by the Academy of Finland, TEKES (technology development agency in Finland), European Union, private companies and foundations.
